Generations:  Kinship Care for Grandparents & Other Relatives Raising Children

In our community a growing number of grandparents and other relatives are raising children. This full time undertaking often means major changes in the lives of those involved and creates an environment filled with complex relationship issues.

Many Grandparents and other relatives are caregivers because of:

  • Teen pregnancy
  • Substance abuse
  • Death
  • Divorce
  • Parental joblessness
  • Neglect
  • Incarceration
  • Child abuse
  • Abandonment
  • Parental illness

Family Pathways recognized that many local families are struggling with these challenges and established the Generations Program for grandparents and other relatives raising children. Generations offers caregivers information, resources and support in an effort to assist them in their new roles as parents.

Unfortunately, when children come to their Caregivers' homes they are troubled, and burdened with a host of concerns which may include:

  • Emotional
  • Behavioral
  • Psychological
  • Medical
  • Academic problems

These issues are frequently compounded by financial and legal concerns.  At Family Pathways, we offer a host of services through our Generations Program designed to address these issues and assist grandparents and other relatives in their efforts to raise strong healthy children.

Services:  Generations provides psychosocial support, family/community support, education, and regulatory support for children in relative placement whose primary presenting problems are family issues related to child abuse, neglect, loss, abandonment, and trauma.  This service offers extensive case management by providing a caregiver and child assessment, oversight of state kinship care, safety, health, and home study requirements, a review of discipline policies and caregiver training.
